A controversial bill requiring people to access public restrooms aligned with the sex of their birth, not their gender identity, has been approved by the Florida Senate and House. The upper house, with a Republican majority, approved HB 26 with 11 votes in favor and 1521 against.

The bill was harshly criticized by Democrats, who argued that the rule would subject transgender people to a situation of "harassment" The bill includes exceptions in the case of bathroom use by children under 12, seniors and people with disabilities.
