Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his main rival Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu gathered huge crowds on Sunday in Turkey. The May 14 election takes on the character of a referendum on Erdogan, who for the first time faces a unified opposition after 20 years in power.

Opinion polls predict a heated presidential election, likely to be the closest-fitting since the AKP came to power in 2002. While both sides assert their ability to win in the first round, the president's name is probably to be decided only by the result of a second round of balloting on May 28.
