The toll of the floods in eastern DRC on Thursday has worsened sharply in recent hours. There are at least 400 dead, according to a local official, and many missing.

After torrential rains on Thursday, several rivers burst their banks, causing major mudslides and landslides. In the affected areas, the damage is enormous: entire villages have been devastated by the waters and the toll is still provisional. The humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has urgently dispatched a team to the scene.
