Burundi on Wednesday hosted the 21st extraordinary summit of the East African Community (EAC) Several heads of state and ministers were present to examine the security situation in eastern DRC. The EAC extended the mandate of the force until September 8, in part to consolidate the gains made on the ground.
Kinshasa has repeatedly questioned its actions and asked for an assessment to be made before any extension of the mandate. In the end, a compromise was reached and a civilian head of mission was appointed.
