The electoral campaign in Turkey, before the second round on Sunday 28 May, is giving rise to diplomatic tensions between Germany and Turkey. Ankara denounced the searches carried out on the homes of Turkish journalists in Germany and summoned the German ambassador.

The nervousness linked to the electoral campaign and the presence of 1.5 million Turkish voters in Germany explain why the searches had diplomatic consequences. The German justice accused them of having published on the front page, last year, the address of a Turkish opponent installed in Germany. Germany has not appreciated the sharp criticism of Ankara evoking an attack on the freedom of the press.
