The seventh ceasefire between General al-Burhan's armed forces and General Hemedti's paramilitary forces came into effect in Sudan on the evening of 22 May 2023. The two sides had pledged to respect a truce that was supposed to begin the day before, at 21:45 local time.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recalled that a monitoring mechanism had been put in place. "If the ceasefire is violated, we will know," he said, "And we will hold perpetrators accountable by punishing them"
