France had voted to ban short domestic flights on its territory in 2021, but the law comes into force on Tuesday on only three air routes. The ban does not apply to connecting flights.
The law mainly endorsed the existing, since the government had forced Air France to give up the routes concerned in return for financial support in May 2020, at the time of the Covid crisis. And it forbade competitors to rush into the breach. European Commission recognises that banning these routes will have only negligible consequences" on achieving climate objectives.
