Nearly a hundred forest fires were still active Monday in the Canadian province of Alberta. The province has asked the federal government for help in dealing with the devastating fires.

Western Canada has been repeatedly hit by extreme weather events, the intensity and frequency of which are increased by global warming. The arrival of cooler temperatures and some rain since Sunday, at least in the south of the province, will help contain the situation, authorities say. In Fox Lake, northern Alberta, a massive fire destroyed 20 homes, a store and a police station.
