The US state wants to restrict the sale of combustion engines from 2026. From 2035, only electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles will be registered.

The government has asked Washington for permission to do so. The German Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has already approved corresponding plans for diesel trucks. For diesel trucks, manufacturers will have to sell a higher percentage of zero-emission vehicles from 2024. The rules are expected to reduce emissions from light commercial vehicles by a quarter by 2037.
