American Amy Pope was elected Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Geneva on 15 May 2023. She was elected head of IOM on Monday in Geneva, Switzerland.

After a first round of secret ballot largely in favour of his rival, Antonio Vitorino withdrew his candidacy. Amy Pope is the first woman to lead the organization, while women are mainly vulnerable in migration files. Critics fear that with Amy Pope at its helm, IOM is adopting Washington's approach to migration, even as the Biden administration has just adopted a stricter border control policy.
