Sweden is the country in the world that gives the second largest share of its gross national income, GNI, to development assistance. Ukraine is today the country to which Sweden gives the most aid.

Human rights organizations warn that people in poverty will pay the price when Swedish aid is redirected towards Ukraine. Minister for Development Aid Johan Forsell rejects this criticism: "Sweden can't be everywhere and do everything at the same time" The Left Party's Lotta Johnsson Fornarve is of a different opinion and says that it is a mistake to leave the one percent target.
