The strike is today, along with the demonstration, the highest degree of social protest in a democratic framework. The first strike we have recorded in history dates back to the year 29 of the reign of Ramses III, in other words around 1166 BC.

In 1539, the seneschal – representative of the King of France Francis I – banned the strike following the great tric* of the Printers of Lyon. The prohibition of any form of work organization will be reiterated at the level of the kingdom in the ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts in August of the same year.
