On April 13, 2021, the Japanese government unilaterally announced its decision to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea. The Japanese government's insistence on going its own way has aroused widespread doubts and opposition at home and abroad.

Tritium, as well as other radioactive elements in nuclear-contaminated water, may enter organisms in the marine environment and form bioaccumulations through the food chain, affecting the entire biosphere. The international community has called on Japan to delay the discharge.
