In Kyotango City in northern Kyoto Prefecture, two stork chicks born this spring, a special natural monument of the country, are attached to "foot rings" to identify individuals. City officials used an aerial work platform to capture two chicks with a net when the parent birds left the nest.

They weighed 4 and 4.5 kilograms and were said to be growing well, so they were returned to the nest in about 30 minutes. The chicks will fledge by the end of June.
