The small percentage of female students in the science and engineering field at universities nationwide has become an issue. Tokyo University of Science has decided to establish a so-called "female quota" for some engineering students to enter next year.

Female students who meet certain conditions, such as an average grade of 48 or higher in mathematics and science up to the first semester of their third year of high school, will be selected after an interview and essay exam to be held in October. Nagoya University and the University of Toyama have already set a capacity of 1 to 4 students for this year's entrance examination.
