The Supreme Court of the United States ruled on Thursday that the popular American artist Andy Warhol infringed the copyright of a photographer. The nine justices of the Supreme Court, with a conservative majority, ruled in this direction by 7 votes to 2.

Lynn Goldsmith took a series of snapshots of Prince as he was beginning to emerge as a pop star for Newsweek magazine in 1981. Three years later, when the musician had achieved fame, another publication, Vanity Fair, asked Warhol to make an illustration of Prince for an article.
