On 17 May 1990, homosexuality was removed from the list of mental illnesses of the World Health Organization (WHO) May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. This date enshrines the fight against violence in all its forms – physical, psychological, sexual – exercised against sexual minorities.

In France, this date coincides today with another major anniversary for LGBT+ people: the law opening marriage to same-sex couples, promulgated on May 17, 2013. France became the 9th European country and the 14th country in the world to allow same- sex marriage.
