Construction of the Meiji Jingu Gaien Garden in Tokyo began last month. There has been opposition from residents over plans to cut down the trees.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has asked for more time to plan the project. It has also said it will hold a tree-planting event in the autumn to show the public the benefits of the project, and to gain their understanding of it. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year, according to the government.
