Khader Adnane, a senior member of the Palestinian Islamist movement Islamic Jihad, died in prison on Tuesday. The 45-year-old man had been on hunger strike since early February to protest against his detention by Israel.

The armed organization Islamic Jihad is considered a "terrorist" movement by Israel, the United States and the European Union. Shortly after the announcement, rockets were fired Tuesday morning from the Gaza Strip into Israel, AFP journalists found. The Israeli military said in a statement that warning sirens sounded on a kibbutz near Gaza.
