The 76th edition of the most prestigious film festival in the world takes place from 16 to 27 May. French director Maïwenn's new film "Jeanne Du Barry", starring Johnny Depp as Louis XV, was chosen as the opening film, out of competition, to open the ball Tuesday night.

Among the approximately 70 films in the official selection, 21 will compete for the coveted Palme d'Or, awarded by a jury, chaired this year by Swedish director Ruben Östlund.
