Hulagu Khan was born in 1217, the fifth son of the founder of the Mongol Empire. He was appointed by the "Great Khan" as governor and general of the western region of the empire.

He ruled Iraq for 10 years, and died in 1265. Hulagu was known for his obsession and keen interest in Persian civilization. He fought the Ismaili sect known as the Assassins who had barricaded themselves in the fortress of "Alamut" and attacked the Abbasid Caliphate.
