He was born in Mauritania in 1868. He was one of the first in his family to study the Holy Qur'an.

His father was a well-known scholar in the area. His mother was a teacher. He is the son of a doctor. He has a son, who is also a doctor, and a daughter, who also is a teacher, and two step-daughters, who are also scholars. He died in 2011. He left behind a wife and four children.
