Researchers have analyzed data from more than 48,000 patients published between 2010 and 2020 in search of the main causes that increase the severity of influenza. The results point to bacterial lung infections as one of the most relevant risk factors in influenza virus infections.

The flu is related in Spain to more deaths than those caused by traffic accidents. There are different physical conditions, age, or diseases that make patients who develop influenza have a high risk of complications and death. The impact of bacterial infections associated with cases of influenza may be behind the high lethality of the 1918 pandemic.
