The first sea urchin fishing of the season was held in the Taro district of Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture, on June 6. Fishermen scooped up the fish with a net attached to the end of a five-meter-long spear.
Last year more than 16 tons were landed, and the total amount of transactions exceeded 1 million yen for the first time. The price of urchins is about 1,1 yen per kilogram, which is about the same as last year.
