The National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM) alerts the general public to the risks posed by mydriatic eye drops. These drops, which are used to prepare the eye for an eye examination, can pose serious health hazards if improperly administered.

Poorly administered, these eye drops can lead to heart rhythm disorders, convulsions, hallucinations or a high fever. If eye drops run down the cheeks in large quantities, they can enter the bloodstream, or reach the mouth and therefore be ingested.
