Tokyo's Setagaya Ward has decided to make same-sex partners eligible for compensation. The compensation is for those who die while engaging in activities such as closing floodgates.

Depending on the income of the deceased, 1.890 million yen to 1420 million yen will be paid. It is a rather rare initiative even in the whole country, according to the ward's mayor. The system is only available to married people, the mayor says, and not to non-married couples.
