The series highlights the environmental debate surrounding deep-sea mining. Karim: "We were in a pandemic when we were filming, so there were a lot of parallels" The series is based on Frank Schätzing's science fiction novel 'The Swarm' published in 2004. The book is also about something that takes over the oceans that affects all living things. However, Frank Doelger, who produced the series, changed some of the original story.
