Migration policy continues to be one of the major stumbling blocks of the European project. The impasse to reach consensus between member states in the North and South of the continent has opened a bloody rift.

European rules stipulate that asylum must be managed at the place of arrival, which places an unbearable burden on asylum. Last year Frontex detected some 330,000 irregular border crossings at the EU's external border, the highest figure since the 2016 refugee crisis. The main objective in Brussels is to conclude the negotiation before the end of the legislature, in May 2024.
