The 700-year-old chair is partly made of wood, with golden lion-adorned chair legs. The artifact was made for King Edward II in the 1300s, since then it has been part of the ceremony.

For a time between the 1700s and 1800s, the chair was available for trial seating for ordinary mortals for a penny of money. The chair is said to have been poorly guarded and allowed schoolboys to carve their signatures onto the wooden seat. "P. Abbott slept in this chair July 5-6, 1800" – is a signature you can see on the chair.
