DEWA: The percentage of "losses" in the Dubai water network is one of the lowest in the world

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) said that its implementation of the Smart Water Distribution Management System plays an important role in improving the efficiency of field operations related to monitoring and controlling the water distribution network in Dubai remotely around the clock, which consolidates DEWA's excellence, as the percentage of losses in its water network is one of the lowest in the world.

The system contributed to increasing the number of fully monitored flow meters from nine in 2020 to 93 in 2022, raising the number of fully monitored valves from four to 31, the number of fully monitored valves designed for planned outages from seven to 50, and the number of network checks, tank level control and pressure monitoring devices from two to 21 devices.

According to DEWA, the Smart Water Distribution Management System enhances the monitoring and management of DEWA's water distribution network, improves the automation and efficiency of operations, reliability of water supply and asset management, enhancing its sustainability, and raising the reliability of water supply. It also contributes significantly to improving water budget calculations, updating network hydraulic simulation data on a daily basis.

Global Infrastructure

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, said: "We are committed to achieving the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to continue developing world-class infrastructure that supports the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 and Dubai's comprehensive vision for the sustainability of water resources, as part of the integrated strategy for water resources management in Dubai 2030, which focuses on enhancing resources and using the latest technologies and innovative solutions."

He added: "We continue to develop innovative proactive solutions, relying on our advanced smart network and the latest technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world, enhance customer happiness, and position DEWA as one of the most innovative service institutions in the world."

Al Tayer stressed that "DEWA has made tangible achievements in developing the water network to enhance its efficiency and reliability and raise the quantities of water flow to meet the needs of comprehensive development in accordance with the highest standards of quality, availability, reliability and efficiency," noting that "DEWA's results outperform the elite European and American companies in many indicators, as the percentage of losses in water networks in 2022 reached (4.5%) compared to 15% in North America."

Centralized monitoring system

Eng. Abdullah Obaidalla, Executive Vice President of Water and Civil Engineering at DEWA, said: "The Smart Water Distribution Management System relies on a centralized system for monitoring and remote control around the clock, innovative smart equipment and systems such as flow meters, pressure transducers, advanced motorized valves, peripheral controllers that are installed on the connection points of the transmission pipes with the distribution, and then linked with the remote supervision and control systems for water (SCADA), and an advanced hydraulic management system, which improves the accuracy of the water pipeline with the distribution. Identify and isolate faults, as well as reduce expenses."
