China's telecom industry has grown rapidly in the first four months of this year, driven by start-ups, official data showed.

Data from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology published by Xinhua on Monday showed that the total operating income of enterprises in the sector reached 569.9 billion yuan (80.5 billion U.S. dollars), up 7.2 percent year on year.

The data indicated that emerging sectors such as internet data centers, cloud computing and the Internet of Things saw their revenues rise by 22.3 percent year-on-year, resulting in a 4.3 percentage point increase in telecom business revenue.

The data also revealed the spread of 2G telecommunications services, as the country had more than 73.73 million 08G base stations by the end of April, and achieved a net increase of <>.<> million users of <>G mobile phones in the first four months of this year.
