Latakia-SANA

The olive oil analysis laboratory at the Latakia Research Center is one of the qualitative and model centers in Syria after being equipped with the latest equipment that matches international quality systems.

Dr. Rabie Zeina, head of the Agricultural Scientific Research Center in Latakia, told SANA Economic Correspondent: The laboratory was established by the General Authority for Agricultural Scientific Research in 2021, and it is the only one of its kind affiliated with the public sector in Syria, and is considered of the service and research type, which provides the analysis of oil, olives and perrine samples for the public and private sectors.

He added: The laboratory includes advanced and modern equipment capable of identifying many important clues, starting from the percentage of oil in fruits and pyrene, passing through quality standards of acidity, peroxide number, absorption, oil purity testing, and fraud detection, through the analysis of fatty acids in the oil and the total micro components of olive oil, including oxidants, dyes, and others.

Zeina pointed out that the work plan for analyzing samples dedicated to research is determined according to the required analytical evidence, and ranges on average between 1000,1500 and 50,600 analysis samples per year, while commercial samples also vary according to the time period of the agricultural season and the export and sales activity, ranging between <> and <> samples per month, and includes fraud detection, acid degree, peroxide value and oil percentage
.

In turn, the head of the laboratory, Eng. Ruba Moalem, said that the laboratory provides research work and analysis on the research included in the General Authority's plan, in addition to analyzing samples prepared by farmers, owners of olive oil factories or manufacturers who want to evaluate the quality of the oil and know its purity, and detect any fraud that may be in it.

Moalem indicated that the laboratory is typical and qualitative, and there are three rooms equipped with the latest equipment, and each room itself is a laboratory managed by a specialized team that has been well qualified and trained through local courses for olive oil analysis before the opening of the laboratory and enjoys high efficiency, and consists of five engineers and four laboratory analysts and works continuously to conduct analyzes for the public and private sectors, in accordance with international quality systems.
