Usability 2.0 is at work! Everywhere, we see third places flourishing, these shared spaces that can accommodate a whole bunch of activities, from the solidarity garage to the collaborative workshop, through the fablab or the makerspace. However, among them, coworking premises are a recipe: according to the national association France Tiers-Lieux, 75% of the approximately 3,500 spaces identified in 2022 are shared offices.

Self-employed, business creators, teleworking employees or students and job seekers are increasingly using these structures to take advantage of adapted equipment but also to exchange, expand their network or avoid isolation.

The variety of the offer

If coworking boils down to a shared workspace, this definition translates into an ever richer offer, as confirmed by the Directorate-General for Competition (DGCCRF) by publishing on April 7, 2023 the results of a study carried out in 2021 on this sector under construction. We learn that "the coworking market is very varied depending on the size of the operators and their core activity, the nature of the services offered and the target audience".

Free or paid, run by private companies, associations or made available by local authorities, these spaces are particularly present in urban areas but are also developed in the countryside in "with a view to economic development or revitalization of territories, or even the creation of social links". They can also take various forms, from the small intimate café to the large open space pro.

Although no specific framework exists for the moment, the DGCCRF notes that these structures generally offer individual or shared offices equipped with internet, a kitchen area or a small catering such as cafeteria or food-truck, as well as access to meeting rooms, videoconferencing and reprographic equipment.

You can still find a relaxation area, a terrace, the provision of a parcel relay and sometimes even a gym! In addition, entertainment can be offered, such as conferences or breakfasts with coworkers. The objective: to create a friendly community combining business and social ties.

How to find the right one?

With such diversity, you are spoilt for choice to try the coworking experience! Start by targeting a geographical area that is close to home, easy to access and well connected or has parking. Then find out about the services offered according to what you expect from such a place. Of course, the price is also taken into account.

As the DGCCRF explains, "the rental period of shared workspaces can vary from a few hours (half day) to several months". Subscription systems are also available. And for punctual access of a few hours a day, ticket books are usually available. It's up to you to compare offers and establish the budget you plan to devote to this flexible office.
