On the 29th of last month, the ceiling of the underground parking lot suddenly collapsed at the construction site of a new apartment building in Geomdan New City in Incheon.

As a result of the contractor GS Construction's own investigation, it was found that less rebar was used than the design in more than 30 roof floors.

[Song Chang-young/Professor, Faculty of Architecture, Gwangju University: This is unlikely. Of course, the site director must also be confirmed, and the structural superintendent must check ... This is a very serious security crisis.]

There are other allegations of poor construction.

Three of the 13 companies that delivered ready-mixed concrete to the accident site have been caught by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport for non-conformity in the past three years, SBS has confirmed.

In particular, one of these companies was identified as a company that had major quality problems such as aggregate surface yield management.

[Kim Doo-kwan/National Assembly Land Commissioner (MDP): We must look into this area thoroughly as it is likely that defective concrete was used at the accident site.]

Following a crack in the exterior wall of an apartment building at Seoul Station in March, a controversy erupted in Incheon over poor construction, and GS E&C officially apologized, saying it accepted responsibility.

In addition, the company decided to conduct a thorough safety inspection of all 3 apartment sites nationwide that are currently under construction.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport plans to set up a construction accident investigation committee that includes 3 experts apart from the contractor's own investigation, and will conduct a government-wide investigation until July 1.
