'MRO' is a combination of the three 'maintenance', repair, and overhaul and refers to the 'aviation maintenance industry'. As of last year, the global MRO market was worth 100 trillion won, and it is a huge gold market with an annual growth rate of around 5%. However, Korea's aviation industry has entrusted more than 1 trillion won of MRO volume to foreign countries every year.
In order to foster the MRO industry, which has lagged behind, Korea also rolled up its sleeves in earnest this year. Incheon International Airport Corporation is working with Israel's state-owned Aerospace Industries (IAI), Atlas Airlines of the United States, and Sharp Technics K, a domestic MRO company, to create a large-scale base to convert passenger aircraft into cargo planes or to renovate aircraft. Codenamed 'MRO', this project will bring about a wind of change in Korea's aviation industry.
