Limoges porcelain could soon benefit from the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). A provisional agreement to this effect has been reached between the Council and the European Parliament reports Le Figaro on Wednesday. Producers and craftsmen wishing to benefit from it will have to self-declare and respect specific control procedures. The agreement should be definitively adopted in the coming months.

Better protect artisanal and industrial products

The great novelty is that the label was previously reserved for food and beverages. Other French artisanal products were already protected from counterfeiting on the ground by various labels. But the PGI is a protection that allocates intellectual property rights at European Union level.

Thus, this new rule should give rise to "more innovation and investment in crafts, by helping craftsmen and producers, in particular SMEs, to promote and protect their traditional know-how at EU level, in compliance with competition rules," the Council said in a statement.
