Samsung bans employees from using GPT chat after data leak detected

Samsung Electronics has banned its employees from using popular generative artificial intelligence tools such as Chat GPT after it was discovered that its employees had uploaded sensitive data through the software.

The company notified employees of one of its largest divisions on Monday of the new policy in a memo seen by Bloomberg news agency.

The company is concerned that data sent to artificial intelligence platforms such as Google Bard and Bing is stored on external servers, making it difficult to recover and delete, and may end up leaking it to other users, according to Bloomberg news agency on Tuesday.

The company conducted a survey last month on the use of artificial intelligence tools internally, and said that 65% of respondents believe such services pose a security risk.

Samsung engineers accidentally leaked one of the codes for an internal source by uploading it to Chat GPT, according to the memo.

The nature of the sensitive data was not clear.

A Samsung representative confirmed that a memo was sent banning the use of generative AI services last week.

Samsung told employees: "Interest in generative AI platforms such as Chat GPT is growing internally and externally... While this attention focuses on the usefulness and efficiency of these platforms, there are also growing concerns about the security risks posed by generative AI."
