Tech billionaire Elon Musk wants to get involved in the current hype around artificial intelligence. The Twitter owner and head of the electric car manufacturer Tesla has founded a company in Nevada called X.AI, according to a company database of the US state. Musk and his chief of staff, Jared Birchall, are listed as those responsible.

The Wall Street Journal reported on the company, which had already been registered on March 9, on Saturday night. In recent days, there have been increasing indications of Musk's increased activity in artificial intelligence (AI). The Financial Times reported on Friday that he had already found investors for a new AI company.

The website "Business Insider" wrote that he had thousands of graphics cards from the provider Nvidia bought. The technology is often used for applications based on artificial intelligence. Musk downplayed this in a recent interview: Everyone was buying a lot of graphics cards right now.

Musk called for a pause in development

At the same time, Musk publicly warns of the risks of artificial intelligence software and was a prominent signatory of an open letter at the end of March suggesting a six-month development pause for the technology.

Currently, the text machine ChatGPT, Google's competitor software Bard and programs that can generate images based on text descriptions are causing a stir. At the same time, there are concerns that their skills could be used to produce and disseminate misinformation, for example.

ChatGPT formulates the texts by estimating word for word the probable continuation of a sentence. One consequence of the procedure is currently that, in addition to correct information, it also invents completely false information - but no difference is recognizable to the user. Musk was among the founders of ChatGPT developer OpenAI, but left more than four years ago and is now a critic of the start-up. At Tesla, Musk has been developing a humanoid robot for years, which, according to him, could become more important than the car business over time.
