Dubai International Airport, which has been the world's leading international passenger number since 2014, has made "strong gains" in light of the coronavirus pandemic in terms of total seat capacity occupied by airlines on both international and domestic flights, according to figures from OAG, an international provider of airport and airline data, and the Airports Council World (ACI).

The data, a copy of which was obtained by Emirates Today, showed that Dubai International Airport, whose activity is mainly focused on international travel, advanced five places in light of the pandemic, after jumping from seventh place in 2019 to second place in 2022, in terms of total operational capacity in the international and domestic flights index, recording more than 45 million seats on outbound flights, last year, with increased travel activity in the world's largest air transport hub.

Hartsfield Atlanta Airport, which is mainly focused on domestic travel, maintained the first place in the index of total operating capacity on international and domestic flights during 2022, compared to 2019 levels, followed by Dubai International Airport, then Tokyo International Airport and London Heathrow Airport, which maintained their third and fourth positions respectively in 2022 compared to 2019 levels.

Dubai International ranks first in seat capacity on international flights, and the latest data showed that the total number of scheduled seats on international flights through Dubai International Airport reached about 4.48 million scheduled seats in April, according to OAG, an international provider of airport and airline data.

During the first quarter of this year, the number of scheduled seats occupied by airlines at Dubai International Airport reached more than 13.7 million seats on flights, exceeding the levels of the same period in 2019, with a growth rate of 14%, according to data from Cerium, which specializes in data for international airlines and airports.

Dubai International Airport witnessed an exceptional performance during 2022, as annual passenger traffic increased to about 66 million passengers, exceeding the annual expectations of passenger numbers during the year, in light of the unprecedented numbers witnessed in the last quarter of 2022, being the highest performer and busiest since 2019, taking into account that December 2022 was the busiest month with about 7.1 million passengers, as it was the first time that passenger traffic exceeded this rate since Year 2020.
