Dubai is reportedly considering resuming one of its biggest construction projects, the AED120 billion ($32.6 billion) expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport, in a much-anticipated new major boost to Dubai's economy.

MEED magazine quoted informed sources as saying that talks between officials are underway and the parties concerned have been told to prepare to resume work. The airport development project at Dubai World Central (DWC) will cover an area of 56 square kilometres, including passenger transport tunnels, baggage handling systems, a road network for ground services, and other technical support facilities.

Al Maktoum Airport, which was officially announced in 2014, aims to become the world's largest airport by 2050, with a capacity of 255 million passengers per year. The initial development phase of the project is set to increase the airport's capacity to 130 million passengers annually by 2030, if the same previously announced timetable is adopted.

On the other hand, Dubai International, the world's largest airport in the number of international passengers, handled 66.1 million passengers in 2022, with increasing monthly figures from previous years, and expectations that the figure will reach 78 million in 2023, before returning to pre-pandemic levels in 2024.
