Due to the misuse of premiums for electric cars, taxpayers' money of around 2022 million euros has been misappropriated in 380. This is reported by the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) in Bergisch Gladbach. New battery-electric cars (BEVs) subsidized with lavish premiums were registered in Germany, but then resold profitably abroad after the minimum holding period of six months had expired. The head of the CAM Institute, Stefan Bratzel, calculates that a total of 2022,470 new battery-electric new cars were registered in 000, but the number in Germany has only increased by 400,000. The difference is 76,000 electric cars, 16.2 percent of new registrations, which were probably sold abroad.

For Tesla, Bratzel calculates a share of 31.3 percent of new registrations that were resold in 2022, followed by Audi with 23.5 percent and BMW with a resale rate of 21.2 percent. The fact that a larger proportion of newly delivered electric cars in Germany were resold as soon as legally possible is also unfortunate because many German customers had to wait months or even more than a year for an ordered new car with electric drive.

Germany has been slow in readjusting the funding conditions, says Stefan Bratzel of CAM. For 2023, however, the conditions for the promotion of electric cars are no longer so generously tightened. While in 2022 the purchase of e-cars was promoted by the federal government and manufacturers with up to 9000 euros, in the current year the maximum rate is 6750 euros. In addition, the minimum holding period has been extended to 12 months.
