The partnership agreement was signed yesterday between Busan Newport (PNC) and Boxbay Free Zone in Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza) in Dubai, in the presence of DP World Group Chairman and CEO, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, and Chairman and CEO of SMS Group, Burkhard Dahmen, which developed Boxbay in partnership with DP World.

Smoothness

The Boxbay system will be seamlessly integrated with mobile crane operations on rail and trucks, to modernize a vacant container storage area, offering direct access to each container at any time, eliminating 350,20 unnecessary transfers annually, reducing the total time it takes for trucks to transport containers within the terminal by up to <>%, and adding to Busan Newport's cargo delivery services to its customers.

Modern methods

Bin Sulayem said: "At DP World, we start from Dubai's leading position in the world in the ports and logistics sector, and its continuous trend in adopting modern methods that support the flow of global trade, and in this context comes the design of (Boxbay) as a unique storage system for containers in the field of global trade, which was developed by (DP World) in cooperation with the German SMS Group."

DP World owns a 66% stake in Busan Newport, which handled 5.3 million 20-foot TEUs in 2021.

• The "regime" cuts 350,20 transfers annually. The time to transport containers within the terminal is reduced by <>%.

First commercial operation

DP World Group has announced the commencement of the first commercial operation of the environmentally friendly automated Boxbay system for container storage on elevated platforms, following the success of the pilot program of this technology at Jebel Ali Port since January 2021, where it was tested by leading port operators in the world.

Having proven useful in the metals sector, the technology was developed for port logistics, with DP World and SMS Group building a pilot facility at Jebel Ali Port's Container Terminal 4 in January 2021.
