In the recent period, the local market has witnessed the emergence of outlets offering goods of new brands, at prices lower than their counterparts in the outlets recognized among consumers, as well as offering discounts on a large number of these goods, which makes the difference with other outlets significant.

Consumers said the new brands were unknown to them, wondering why there were such price differences and how good those goods were.

Two officials at two outlets offering these products and goods said that many of the brands offered are of different origin, and some of them are entering the country's markets for the first time, and are imported at preferential prices.

They described the quality of the goods offered as "reasonable", pointing out that these outlets depend on increasing sales to consumers seeking to buy goods at low prices and reasonable quality, and the outlets themselves produce some of these goods, which allows them to reduce their price.

Spreads

In detail, consumer Assem Riad said: «The past period witnessed the spread of a number of outlets that offer food and non-food products of new brands and unknown to the consumer, at prices lower than those offered in traditional outlets».

He added that the outlets offer discounts on a large number of these goods, which makes the price difference large, compared to brands in other outlets, stressing that there is a great demand for these goods and outlets, and wondering about the reasons for the large price differences and the quality of these goods. Riad presented some of the prices offered by these outlets, saying: «The outlet sells a variety of fresh chicken at 17.95 dirhams per kilogram, and offered a discount of 22% to drop its price to 14 dirhams, at a time when the price of a kilogram of chicken from well-known brands in other outlets ranges between 23 and 24 dirhams, and drops to 20 dirhams in the event of discounts». He continued: «A set of bottles of facial tissues are also offered for 8.95 dirhams, although the price of other brands in other outlets ranges between 15 and 18 dirhams, and drops to about 13 dirhams in the event of offers».

Quality Questions

For his part, consumer Fahad Abdullah agreed that the new outlets are witnessing a great demand from consumers. He said that it sells food and non-food goods to brands previously unknown to the consumer, at prices lower than the outlets known to the consumer, in addition to offering discounts on a number of goods, which makes the price difference large. Abdullah questioned the reasons for the low prices of these commodities and their quality. He explained that a sales outlet usually offers an egg dish (30 eggs) for 13.95 dirhams, and reduced its price by dirhams, while the egg dish from other brands is sold in customary outlets between 18 and 20 dirhams, without discounts usually.

He also pointed to a two-kilogram washing powder for 11.95 dirhams, with a 17% discount to drop its price to 9.9 dirhams, while its price from other brands ranges between 21 and 22 dirhams, and drops to 18 dirhams in the event of discounts.

Great turnout

In the same context, consumer Samir Saeed said that he buys household supplies from these outlets, stressing that their goods are cheap, with a high demand for them. He added: «The outlet offered a box containing 12 bottles of water volume of 500 milliliters and from an unknown brand for 4.95 dirhams, and then offered a 20% discount to become 3.96 dirhams, while the price of the package from other brands ranges between 9.90 dirhams and 12 dirhams, depending on the outlet». He also pointed to a 4-litre fabric softener priced at Dh13.95 from a new brand, while fabric softeners at other outlets range from Dh25 to Dh28, with discounts reaching Dh20.

Vegetables and fruits

Consumer Dima Salim pointed out that there are price differences in some types of vegetables and fruits, ranging between two and three dirhams per kilogram.

She explained that the new outlets offer bananas at 4.40 dirhams per kilogram, while the same from another origin and in well-known outlets is offered at 6.65 dirhams, lettuce at 4.45 dirhams for seven dirhams and cucumbers at 2.95 dirhams after reducing it from 3.75 dirhams, while it is sold in other outlets for 4.50 dirhams without any discounts.

Reasonable quality

In addition, an official in one of the new outlets, Arnal Juris, said that the new outlets offer brands at cheaper prices with "reasonable" quality, pointing out that many of these brands are of different origin, and some of them enter the country's markets for the first time, and are imported at preferential prices. He explained that the sales outlets depend on increasing sales in the country's market, which is characterized by its high purchasing power, indicating that some of these goods are produced by sales outlets.

Rina Stano, sales officer at a sales outlet, said this type of outlet is popular with different categories of consumers who seek to buy low-priced and affordable goods. She added that the outlets themselves produce some of these goods, which allows them to lower their price, to win more consumers and increase their sales. No competition

For his part, an official in a large outlet, who preferred not to be named, said that there is no competition between new outlets and other outlets that offer goods of higher quality, and are frequented by various categories of consumers, noting that the state market is used to offering goods of high quality.

He explained that although there are noticeable differences in the prices of some commodities, there is a great convergence in the prices of some commodities, such as meat, especially since they are of the same origin, as well as varieties.

Sea: brand diversity and prices in the interest of consumers

Retail expert Ibrahim al-Bahar said that there is a difference in the tastes of consumers, especially since they belong to different nationalities.

He added that the prices of many goods have been affected by the global wave of inflation, which makes consumers look for qualities at lower prices, stressing that the diversity of brands and prices is in the interest of consumers who are provided with freedom and flexibility to choose according to their financial income.

Al-Bahar called on traditional outlets recognized among consumers to reduce their profit margins, diversify imports, while maintaining a high level of quality, and advised consumers to check the quality of goods, production date and expiration in outlets that offer cheap goods, especially food commodities.

He stressed that the authorities responsible for food control are doing their part to verify the quality of goods in the country's markets.
